Special Kids Day, established in 1990, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization
located in Elmhurst, Illinois. It is an all-volunteer and totally free holiday event
for children who are developmentally delayed or physically challenged. It is
held annually on the first Wednesday of December by proclamation from the
Governor of Illinois. Special Kids Day builds on the United Nations resolution
#47/3, which also sets aside the first week of December to promote integrating
the disabled into society.
This event is designed for all special needs children and their families to have
an opportunity to experience the joys and laughter of the holiday season in a
friendly, obstacle free space. It is a combined community effort among local
businesses, the Department of Education at Elmhurst College and dedicated
individuals. The event features an opportunity for these children to visit with
Santa Claus and have a photo taken, partake in holiday treats and receive a
free goodie bag.
